FLOYD HUSK: AN APPRECIATION FROM HIS COLLEAGUES
It is with great sorrow that we inform the NCHM community of the death of Floyd Husk, our Vice President for Operations and a trainer of the Certified Occupancy Specialist (COS) program, after a long battle with cancer. Floyd was only 45 years old.
Prior to joining NCHM, Floyd had served with the United States Coast Guard, leaving the service as a Chief Warrant Officer. He originally joined us as Director of Military Housing Operations before assuming leadership of our Operations Division, a position he held at the time of his death.
Although Floyd's background was outside of traditional housing management, he quickly demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the issues involved in housing management as well as a genuine appreciation for the daily challenges faced by site staff. Floyd's empathy, his total humanity, are traits that helped make him so good at his job -- whether he was at his desk in Orange Park, Florida or in front of a group of housing management professionals pursuing their COS certifications.
During Floyd's illness, he dispensed only courtesy and good will to his colleagues. Floyd was not a negative person, and so he refused to be "down" or "defeated" about the cancer that ultimately took his life. Instead, he displayed a rare courage and and even rarer optimism, believing that he could beat the odds. And his family and colleagues, who loved him and worked with him, wouldn't have bet against him.
And we believe that Floyd was right, although not in the way any of us would have preferred. Cancer claimed his body, but a human being's life surely cannot be measured in the strength of flesh, organ or bone. The true measure of a person is the impact they have on others and the degree to which they inspire both respect and love. Floyd led, guided by his God, a life that must be accepted as an exemplary influence. He will be missed, and his influence on all of us at NCHM will last many years beyond his own, much too short life.
Funeral arrangements are pending. If anyone in the NCHM community wishes to share your memories of Floyd, please send them to service@nchm.org or by mail to:
The Family of Floyd Husk, c/o NCHM, 350 Corporate Way, Suite 400, Orange Park, FL 32073 and we will make sure that Floyd's wife and children receive them.
