Description

Emergency events, whether natural disasters, public health crises, infrastructure failures, or security incidents, are occurring with greater frequency and severity, and multifamily housing professionals are increasingly on the front lines of response. Emergency Management for Housing Professionals (EMHP) is NCHM’s comprehensive training program designed to help housing professionals prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies that threaten life safety, property operations, and business continuity.

EMHP introduces participants to the core principles of emergency management using an all-hazards approach tailored specifically to multifamily housing. The course explores the changing risk environment facing housing providers and explains why traditional property management practices alone are no longer sufficient during crisis situations. Participants will learn how emergency management integrates into daily operations and why preparedness must be embedded across maintenance, leasing, communications, and leadership roles

Through real-world examples and practical frameworks, the course walks participants through the four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The course demonstrates how these phases reduce risk, limit damage, and speed a return to normal operations. Special attention is given to emergency action planning, risk assessment, communication strategies, command and control structures, and coordination with first responders and external partners.

This course is designed for all housing industry stakeholders, including site managers, maintenance supervisors, regional managers, owners, asset managers, and compliance or risk professionals. Course materials provide actionable guidance that can be applied immediately at the property level.

There is no certification exam at the conclusion of the course. Participants who successfully complete both days of training will earn the Emergency Management for Housing Professionals (EMHP) designation.
