New HUD Guidance on Assistance Animals

Nearly 60% of the Fair Housing complaints filed each year involve denial of reasonable accommodation requests by persons with disabilities. Complaints about assistance animal requests is the fastest growing issue and they are among the most troublesome for management and owners.

On January 28, 2020 HUD's Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity Office released FHEO Notice 2020-01 providing updated guidance on assistance animals as reasonable accommodations under the Fair Housing Act. A significant motivator for HUD in issuing this new guidance was to reduce the number of abuses of the animal assistance provisions.
